How you can fight the "Big Beautiful Bill"
10 months ago – Wed, Jun 04, 2025 at 08:16:48 AM

As many of you in the US are no-doubt aware, the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" has passed the House of Representatives and is now with the Senate.

This Bill specifically targets gender-affirming care in a time when Trans- and Nonbinary-identifying folks are in most grave need of support.

Our friend and fellow comic creator, Steve Bryant, wrote up a powerful and informative post about the Big Beautiful Bill and how each of us can do our part to help fight it. We'll share that post below.

"I’ve talked before about my child, now 24, who’s trans. She came out six years ago, and since then, has been happier than I can remember. I bring this up because Republicans have actively targeted the trans community for nearly a decade now. and plenty of Democrats are abandoning them with an eye toward fighting other battles.

"I don’t remember a U.S. political party actively targeting a marginalized group of its citizens. But that’s what the GOP, MAGA, and Trump have done—fully facilitated by the Democrats’ lack of resistance.

"The “Big Beautiful Bill” narrowly passed the House of Representatives and is now in the Senate. The bill would prohibit federal Medicaid funding from being used for gender-affirming medical care. However, the bill’s provisions would affect trans people with private insurance, not just Medicaid. One measure would prohibit insurance plans sold on Affordable Care Act marketplaces from considering gender-affirming care as an “essential health benefit,” which has additional consumer protections.

"81% of transgender adults in the U.S. have thought about suicide, 42% of transgender adults have attempted it, and 56% have engaged in non-suicidal self-injury over their lifetimes, due to a lack of societal recognition and acceptance of their gender identities, and increasing politically motivated attacks on transgender individuals.

"Gender affirming care reduces these numbers.

"I’m asking you, as my friends, to call your Senators and tell them not to vote for this bill. Lives are at stake. You probably know more people than just me who have transgender loved ones. We all need your help to protect our children, friends, and loved ones."

- Steve Bryant

Like Steve, we encourage anyone who wants to do their part to help fight this harmful bill to contact your local Senator and urge them to vote against this harmful legislature.

Find your Senator's Phone Number here.

And if you're interested in using a script to communicate your concerns, here's a to-the-point template (also courtesy of Steve):

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].

I’m calling to urge [SENATOR NAME] to oppose any version of H.R. 1, the House budget reconciliation bill, that contains any discriminatory exclusions on transition-related healthcare for transgender people. This bill will cause hundreds of thousands of transgender people on Medicaid and ACA policies to lose access to life-saving health care, and threatens the lives of transgender people across the country.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

IF LEAVING VOICEMAIL: Please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied.

We live in scary times, but know that you are not alone. There are millions of people out there willing to fight for you and for your right to be who you are.
